Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino.. Two great film makers from Hollywood are known for their peculiar ways of film making … and the whole world have a huge fan base for these ace film makers … I myself have no clue how many times I’ve watched The Departed and Kill Bill .. In India also these ace film makers have made huge impact in many contemporary film makers . Specially down south … Needless to mention, I’m in full awe of these two directors just because of their deliverables in the south film industry…Mr. Lokesh Kanakaraj & Karthik Subbaraj .
Maanagaram , Kaithi, Master, Vikram, Leo and now Coolie .. Lokesh has created a Cinematic universe for himself. Where as Karthik Subbaraj started with Pizza , Jigarthanda, Petta ,Jagame Thanthiram , Mahaan and Now Retro has a clean space for himself among the south film lovers…
One common thing among these director duo is , they are heavily inspired from the making style of Martin Scorsese & Queintin Tarantino of the Hollywood and those film making elements can be clearly seen their blockbusters just to prove the statement.
When it comes to Karthik ,he gave immense importance to the characters then the plot… infact the plot revolves around his characters in the whole journey. Twists and turns are a common phenomenon in most of Karthik’s movie and so the movie goers who look forward to a clean plot and the characters which are demanding for the plot will find it little discomfort to digest the sense of his movies…this makes Karthik a stand alone director who can bring the best out of any actors who gets in to his directorial shoes.
At the same time Lokesh Kanakraj demands much importance to his plot and this is also because Lokesh is primarily a writer who understands the sensitivity of his audiences. He values and try to showcase his character’s life situations and the journey through it more than the emotions which each charectors goes through. Excellent music sence is another plus in Lokesh’s film making.
Both these directors handle crime genre pretty decently, however Karthik gave more flavours to its rawness where as Lokesh concentrate more of its style . Since both these icons have similar influencing factors, most of the time, as an audience we will be able to predict the story line of the whole movie immaterial of twists and turns included in the story. This aspect, sometimes give a low impact on their films.
We are about see these stalwarts two upcoming projects on the silver screen .. “Nadippin Nayakan” Surya’s Retro Directed by Karthik Subbaraj is all set to release by May 1st 2025 and Much anticipated, Our Own “Super Star ” Rajani Sir’s Coolie Directed by Lokesh Kanakraj also set to release by 14th Aug 2025.
After so many setbacks and flops, Surya is coming in with Retro and the posters of it seems very promising. Hopefully this one bring back the Retro Surya back again to the mainstream.
In his 75th year , Superstar Star Rajani Sir is with Lokesh Kanakaraj and with Coolie , Lokesh has also included Rajani Sir to his Cinematic Universe, Like many movie lovers, I’m eagerly waiting for Aug 14th to have a glimpse of Superstar with His natural Swag.
Tamil film industry is gonna have a gala time with these two stalwarts of filmmaking, Karthik Subbaraj & Lokesh Kanakaraj bringing up with their upcoming projects with such super star cast in it.
