Kunjiramayanam is a Malayalam film directed by Basil Joseph that was released in 2015. Not only the film, but also as a debutant director, Basil completely captured the hearts of the audience with its pure humor. After that, Godha in 2017 and in year 2021, Basil’s third directorial and first superhero film of Malayalam. Both movies were super hit.
Basil’s film journey as a director was such that he could handle serious stories and not only just humor by the success of Godha and Minnal Murali. Basil’s filmography later proved that he could handle things not only behind the camera but also in front of the camera.
As an actor, I started paying attention to Basil from the first OTT release Joji starring Fahadh. Basil played the character of Father Kevin and he pulled it so well. But it was through Jaaneman that he was able to bring his comic timing to the audience that year. The story of Joymon was very quickly accepted by the people. Later, after playing the role of a judge in Enna Than Kesukodu and a young vetenary doctor in Palthu Janvar, when he reached Rajesh in Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, Basil not only grew into a favorite hero of the family audience but also became a minimum guarantee hero of directors.
All the films in which Basil acted were Falimi, Varshangalku Shesham, Guruvayurampala Nadayil, Nunakuzhi, Vazha, Ajayante Randaam Moshanam Sookshmadarshini did very well in box office too are among the few character roles he played… Although the lead roles were less, those characters are of full of acting potential which revealed Basil as a seasoned actor. That is how, Basil suddenly became a minimum guarantee actor for directors and family audiences as well.
Basil proved that any role would suit him more than just a good actor by performing a normal comedy and making a few people laugh. Ponman, which came out in 2025 has Basil as hero, proved that Ajesh PP would probably not have captured the audience’s attention this much if not for Basil. Ajesh PP in it were a film that came out differently from the usual hero concepts. Ajesh PP, who faced the giant Mario only with his courage, was perhaps a character that taught a large community that was thinking of ending their lives after failing in different situations to fight. Perhaps that courage is what the filmmaker Basil learned in his film career!
